Warm-up, grip, serve and stance
The main points in 30 seconds
Master of Sport Nikolai Ukk explains the basics in Russian: warm-up, the right grip, two kinds of serve and the base stance.
- Warm-up: squats, then the joints — ankles, knees, shoulders, back — and steps: side steps, cross steps, forwards and backwards.
- Grip: racket edge towards you, thumb and index finger wrap the handle, the other fingers lie loosely. Don't make a fist. For backhands the thumb presses the wide bevel.
- Forehand serve — high and long: the shuttle drops straight down at the back line. Mostly for singles.
- Backhand serve — short: arms out in front, a short wrist action. The basis of doubles.
- Base stance in the centre: feet wide, knees bent, hands in front, body slightly forward.
