Defensive step: what each foot does
The main points in 30 seconds
How to stand and move against a smash: foot direction and the different jobs of the right and left foot.
- Point the feet where you lifted the shuttle: expecting a smash — right foot slightly back.
- Don't hop in defence: the smash arrives while you're in the air. Stay low and wait for the opponent's hit.
- Prepare for the front first: weight forward, heels slightly up.
- The feet have different jobs: push off the right — burst forward; push off the left — step back.
- A hop split is for beginners and for when you lose rhythm; after that, a low wide stance and move at once.
