The split step
The main points in 30 seconds
Not a jump but a quick drop just before your opponent hits — every movement starts from it.
- Split-step just before your opponent hits, so you can push off at once towards the shuttle.
- Feet slightly wider than the shoulders; a short drop that widens the stance, knees bent, weight on the balls of the feet.
- It is not a jump: if you're in the air when your opponent hits, you'll be late.
- Advanced players do a directional split step: the foot position already points where they'll move.
- Don't rush back to the centre at all costs: read your opponent and prepare for where they're likely to hit.
